“How the hell do twenty-five students allow themselves to be lined up against a wall in a classroom and picked-off one by one.  How does that happen?  When they could have rushed the gunman, the shooter and most of them would have survived.”

Comment:

The shootings occurred on Monday, April 16th, 2007.  The next day, before details of the murders were publicly known, Mr. Boortz pondered a concocted scenario in which the gunman, Mr. Cho lined the students against a wall and methodically shot them one at a time.  We later learned that the horrific shootings took place in a chaotic setting with many students and teachers taking actions that reduced the number of people killed.

Beginning on the 17th, Mr. Boortz’s listeners emailed him with complaints over his ill-timed and ignorant remarks.  On Wednesday the 18th, instead of acknowledging his mistakes and apologizing to his audience, Mr. Boortz escalated his rhetoric, his voice, in the above clip, rang with contempt.  He blamed the victims for their own murders, falsely accusing them of doing nothing to stop the killing.  From that day on, he mocked callers and emailers who challenged his stance.  He even claimed that the controversy would benefit his show, that more people would tune in to hear what all the ruckus was about and then become loyal listeners.

Mr. Boortz’s callous and reckless public statements were disgraceful.  In addition, it was galling that he attempted to exploit the controversy over the attention that his remarks were receiving in the press.

Mr. Boortz owes an apology to the surviving families and all those affected by this tragic event.  He also owes an apology to his listeners for knowingly offering a false story about how the shootings took place.

On April 18th, Boortz revisited and expanded upon his hateful remarks from a day earlier.

“These kids should have done something to defend themselves from this shooter at Virginia Tech...  And this is a just a great indication to me of how far advanced we are with the woosification of America.  What a nation of candy asses we’ve become. I mean not only do they stand there, in terror, waiting to be executed, without doing a damn thing to protect themselves except maybe hiding behind a desk.

But then somebody comes along and suggests that “gosh, why didn’t they...”

“How dare you ask that question.  How dare you.  That’s so…”.

It’s amazing.  I mean, not only have we lost the will to be responsible for ourselves and to take action when necessary to protect and preserve our own lives?  Not only have we lost the will to do that in many instances but to even suggest that we should do that has become politically incorrect…”

“Sledgehammer” (1:09) 1.3Mb

Boortz claims that his bumper music is random.  That’s very unlikely as on this day, April 18th he used the above mentioned tune and Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” after making crass comments regarding the horrific slayings at Virginia Tech.

When a caller asks Boortz to apologize to the students, Boortz mocks him.  Includes an ad for Pike Family Nurseries (:31) .5Mb

After lying about the murders, Mr. Boortz callously used Pat Benatar’s rock classic,

“Hit Me with Your Best Shot” as bumper music.  Watch the video below.
